Ganhuff Riscan is a man of regret. As a young man, he was the top surgeon at Coruscant's Galactic General Hospital; unable to handle the pressure of his demanding position, he soon fell into spice addiction. While operating under the influence, he caused an accident that resulted in the deaths of twenty-three of his patients. Refusing to be brought to trial, he ran for the Outer Rim, making a living as a gambler on Nar Shaddaa under the constant threat of bounty hunters and Republic Judicials. Falling in with Buruk and Lynli, he once again has a chance to practice his true craft and be the man he once was. Will he somehow find salvation among this band of outlaws, or will his addiction finally destroy him once and for all?

Maalku Tekot is a Gand Findsman, a sage who divines omens in the ammonia mists of his homeworld, often making profound yet whimsical observations about the universe. Sneaking aboard the Cuun'yaim to acquire Ganhuff's bounty, he was defeated in combat by Buruk, to whom he has now pledged himself in order to follow his destiny. Plagued by visions of battling tortoises and dark futures, he must separate the portents from the symbolism to see the path laid out for the crew. But what does destiny have in store for them?
